For centuries, the plains of Turopolje have been known as a noble land, historically called Campi Nobilium Communitatis Turopolye. Here generations of noblemen lived, cultivating the soil and enjoying its abundant riches.
One early summer morning, at the break of dawn, while the mist still danced between dreams and waking life, the noblemen set out for a field of barley. Stretching a long rope between them, they walked across the field, sweeping the morning dew from the ears of barley.
The first rays of sunlight had barely begun to pierce the mist when the silence was broken by the ringing of a church bell. And then, out of nowhere, a mighty crash echoed across the field — Boom! A witch had fallen straight from the sky! The noblemen rushed to capture her, but to no avail — the witch quickly fled into the nearby forest, screeching and hurling curses across the field. Chaos ensued. Was the field cursed? What would become of all that barley? After a long debate, the noblemen finally concluded that there was but one way to free the barley from its evil fate: it must be purified by fire and transformed into the water of life. Whether there is any truth to this curious tale, no one today can say for certain. Perhaps our noblemen had already sampled a little aqua vitae before setting out for the field, and the witch was merely a figment of their imagination? Be that as it may, the legend lives on among the misty fields of Turopolje, in our copper stills, and in every bottle of Meglin Single Malt Whisky.
